The Descent: Planetary Spheres and the Sins of the Soul

In the Corpus Hermeticum, specifically the Poimandres, the human soul is described as a divine entity that descends through the seven planetary spheres. As it passes each "Governor," it is clothed in specific qualities. While these qualities allow us to function in the material world, they also act as psychic weights—vices that mirror what later theology would call the Seven Deadly Sins.

Astrological Context: In Hermeticism, the planets are not just physical bodies but archontic forces that administer Fate (Heimarmene). The "sins" are the gravity of the celestial spheres.

1) The Seven Garments of Vice

As the soul falls toward Earth, it picks up the energetic residue of the Seven Governors. Each planet contributes a specific "downward" impulse:

2) Astrology as the Map of the Prison

In this framework, your birth chart is not just a personality map—it is a receipt of the qualities you "borrowed" during your descent. These planetary placements represent the specific distortions the soul must untangle. Astrology reveals the structure of your habitual reactions, showing which Governor holds the strongest leash on your psyche.

3) The Ascent: Casting Off the Rags

The goal of Hermetic Gnosis is the reversal of this process. Upon death—or through initiation during life—the soul must travel back through the spheres and return each vice to its respective Governor:

Only when "stripped" of these seven garments can the soul enter the Ogdoad (the eighth sphere) to join the divine powers in praise of the Father.

4) Transmuting Sin into Virtue

The "Deadly Sins" are simply planetary energies used in ignorance. Under the light of awareness, the Mars energy of Wrath becomes Courage; the Saturnian Sloth becomes Disciplined Silence. The prison only remains a prison as long as we mistake these planetary "garments" for our true skin.
